| About Us |
This is a project initiated with the same enthusiasm and passion that we want to put in our wines. We began with our first vintage on september 2005, since then we have grown in enthusiasm and projects.
The beginnings of our vineyard farm date from a long time ago (for more information you can visit http://www.gelida.org/mas2/mata.htm). The family and the country house go together thanks to the Catalan succession system where the oldest son inherits the main properties of the family.
Its name, Can Mata d’Abelló, was established around the mid XVII century from the Mata familiy name, one of our ancestor lines, grandsons of the nicknamed Ballón. But there are documents that indicate that our family was living in this farmhouse already in 1513. Since then, from generation to generation, our family raised vineyards and produced wine. Now is the first time, however, that our wine is elaborated to be bottled under a brand name.
We are three brothers, Joan, Ramon and Jordi Alemany Bonastre, that have taken the challenge to make wine of prime quality. We still can remember our grandfather and our father using the old grinding machines to make a young wine that, although it was not a first class, had his faithful supporters because it was totally natural. We want to keep the tradition and honor their memory.
Can Mata d’Abelló is a typical farmhouse of the Penedes region known as Mas or Masia. It is located between the towns of Gelida and Sant Llorenç d’Hortons. The winery is on the rear part of the house.
